trina turk

Trina Turk considers herself lucky on two counts. First, because she knew at a fairly young age what she wanted to do when she grew up – to design clothing professionally and second, because she is succeeding at doing it beyond her wildest dreams.  Born in California and raised there and in the state of Washington, her mother taught her to sew when Turk was 11 years old. She studied apparel design at the University of Washington and took her first job with the Seattle-based sportswear manufacturer, Britannia Jeans. Turk’s next stop was Los Angeles, where she waded into a sea of 30 prints per season designing surf wear for Ocean Pacific. Other jobs designing mostly juniors followed.

Realizing that her resume wasn’t likely to bring offers to design a line of contemporary clothing for women, Turk's next step was the launch of her own business. With her husband, then stylist, now photographer Jonathan Skow as partner, Trina Turk, the company, was born in 1995. In the same year her clothing was sold by Barney’s New York, Fred Segal, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Inspired by the multicultural mix, architecture, and landscape of Los Angeles and California, The Trina Turk Collection is full of the season’s most casually sophisticated and “must have” silhouettes. Trina’s philosophy is to create wearable, optimistic fashion that incorporates the best aspects of classic American sportswear.

Trina Turk offers a dynamic swimwear collection inspired by the glitz, glamour and opulence of Mexico’s world-class resort, Acapulco. The preferred travel destination of international jetsetters and Hollywood’s influencers during the ‘60s and ‘70s, Acapulco was pure exotica; its tropical motif is featured throughout Trina Turk’s collection of swimwear, beach apparel and accessories. The designer captures the city’s luxurious hotels, decadent nightlife venues and sensuous curves of mile-long beaches along with the seductive blues of the ocean and glimmering gold of the night stars, to create the quintessential “Acapulco Gold” look.

The collection features Trina Turk’s signature prints such as the vibrant “Acapulco Gold,” the bold “Tamarindo Beads,” and the luscious “Palma Sola.” The color palette features citron, fuchsia and ultraviolet. Additional highlights include gold hardware inspired by handpicked vintage jewelry in brushed links, circular-textured rings and filigree X’s. The collection’s feminine silhouettes includes one-piece keyhole bandeaus, halters with intricately-woven fabrics through gold hardware, sash hipsters and bikinis with border prints. Matching accessories such as light-weight cover-ups range from tunics and keyhole halter dresses in modal jersey to border-printed tunics and rompers in super-fine knit jersey along with beach towels and totes.  The collection also includes "Mr. Turk" menswear, classic American resort wear styling reworked with Trina Turk’s signature prints and bold colors.
